This Is the Story of You Beth Kephart Books
No one writes quite like Beth Kephart. She pulls off the extraordinary trick of writing books that both captivate readers and inspire writers. I can’t toss enough adjectives at her uniquely lyrical prose style. Poetic. Gorgeous. Inventive. Revelatory. Kephart captures the atmosphere of her small-island setting beautifully, and crafts sentences that twist in the most unexpected, evocative directions. Readers will savor while writers will be tempted to highlight and underline. If you’re a writer plodding through a difficult draft or polishing your prose, this book will inspire you to return to the keyboard or crack back open that notebook. Kephart’s style is that strong a breath of fresh air.Beyond the prose that shines in all her work, Kephart crafts a compelling narrative in the YA novel “This is the Story of You.” Mira, a life-long resident of Haven (a place just one ‘e’ short of heaven, she muses) finds herself cut off from her mother and brother on the eve of a massive, destructive storm reminiscent of Hurricane Sandy and the havoc it wrought on New Jersey several years ago. Kephart’s cast, including seasoned outcast Old Carmen and Mira’s classmates, the O’Sixteens, must pull together to survive the aftermath. Add a bit of a mystery to that compelling premise—who tried to break in to Mira’s house right before the storm, and why?—and you’ve got a beautifully written, memorable page-turner that will have readers seeking out Kephart’s other novels. Highly recommended!

This Is the Story of You Beth Kephart Books Reviews
The last sixty percent of "This Is the Story of You" easily earns five stars. Unfortunately, Beth Kephart takes her time getting started. There’s an argument to be made that the slow, uneventful beginning is required to draw the reader into the off-season pace of life on Haven, a small barrier island, to set the emotional scene for when disaster strikes. But I almost gave up a few times.
I’m glad I didn’t. The characters are unique and robust. Kephart interweaves their narratives beautifully to create an aching, thought-provoking tale of human life torn asunder. The resulting story is so memorable and sad as to be haunting, a true accomplishment.
I loved the way it was written. Loved Mira`s way of looking at life. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good read that is unlike your usual stories about love and family and survival.
This YA novel is lyrical and beautifully written, while telling a story that is real and mythic at the same time. As a high school teacher, I will be recommending this wonderful story of a young woman who loses touch with family and sees her entire life upended by a Hurricane Sandy-like storm. This novel is timely, honest, and beautifully rendered even in the face of unimaginable loss. I am a new fan of this author and highly recommend this book.
We see pictures, we read stories, we try to imagine what we ourselves might do in the wake of a superstorm like the one that hits the tiny island of Haven in Beth Kephart’s beautifully written novel, 'This Is the Story of You.' What would we try to retrieve from the damage? How do we deal with the inability to reach family and friends?
“We had to survive because others hadn’t,” observes Mira, the seventeen-year-old narrator. “We had to grieve the countless losses.” And then she asks the question to which there is no satisfying answer.
‘What is the logic of rescue?’
My introduction to the work of Beth Kephart was an earlier novel, 'You Are My Only,' an unsettling story all the more gripping for the subtlety in which it unfolds. In addition to very lyrical prose, what that novel shares with her latest are characters defined by resilience and resourcefulness. The storm at the center of 'This Is the Story of You' has the misfortune to hit when Mira’s mother and brother are on the mainland. In the grand scheme of fictional strategies, they could be gone for any number of random reasons. But there’s something more urgent going on here. Mira’s brother has a rare disorder for which he needs weekly treatment. That their departure, before the storm hits, also leaves Mira to fend for herself, ups the ante in a story as ageless in its themes as it is young adult at heart.
The calm before the narrative storm is set up superbly mid-September, a new school year, science in the dunes, listening and watching for birds with Ms. Isabel. Like the best of teachers, she has a gift for instilling in her students an appreciation for what she wants them to learn If you love the world, you will save it. And like the best of writers, Beth Kephart lets subtext inform the narrative flow Mara makes 'Monsters of the Sea' the subject of her independent study project. Her best friends focus on what’s gone ('Vanishing Cities') and what might still be saved ('Shore Up'). Then there’s Old Carmen on the beach, when the summer crowds have left, with her fishing pole and transistor radio, the archetypal loner shrouded in mystery, self-sufficient, yes, but the furthest thing in the world from selfish. How it falls together after everything falls apart makes this multi-layered story of survival also a story of what stands to be found even in the wake of so much that has been lost so quickly.
This was a really enjoyable read even for this very non young adult. I read a fair number of YA books, some recommendations from my grandchildren & some I find on my own & this is definitely one of the best in a long time. The author's writing is lovely, she doesn't "dumb down" her story but instead makes the reader slow down & appreciate the story, the characters, the scenery...the whole package. I liked that the main character, Mira, wasn't sitting around feeling sorry for herself & waiting for someone to rescue her but I instead dug in & saved herself & helped others. My only criticism is that the ending seemed a bit abrupt. I wanted to know what happened next... or maybe I just didn't want the story to end. I highly recommend this book & can't wait to read more of Beth Kephart's writing.
