White Nights A Thriller Shetland Island Mysteries Ann Cleeves Books

Very few writers can have in their output 4 strong series with almost equally great success. Ann Cleeves is one of those rare birds. The TV show "Vera" made her more popular, but the first entry in this, Shetland series brought her a Dagger award. The second novel in this original series is very good. I see that people complain about the same thing everybody else complains these days. Apparently everything is too slow paced and not enough fast moving for these readers. Well, I couldn't disagree more. For stupid, relentless action turn to Hollywood movies, but be aware, after every movie you watched , you'll have less brain cells left. I prefer Ann Cleeves, at least she doesn't insult my intelligence.

White Nights A Thriller Shetland Island Mysteries Ann Cleeves Books Reviews

Of the three Shetland stories I've read, I liked this one best. I think Ms Cleeves did better here with descriptions of people, places, things. I've read these out of order because I've also seen a couple of the stories on TV. I really like Doug Henshall as Perez, even if he doesn't fit the description found in the written story. I have become so interested in the Shetland Islands from these stories and wish I could visit. I also thoroughly enjoy the Vera Stanhope stories Ms Cleeves writes. Brenda Blythyn does a terrific job as Vera. I'm next going to read Blue Lightening as I'd like to know what happened with Fran. White Nights showed her and Jimmy just getting started on a great relationship. Fran seemed really together. White Nights was great. So sad about Edith. One criticism is the similar to another reader's, that being Ms Cleeve's use of contractions, such as 'he'd', Sometimes this is useful in character speech, but it is so consistent in her books. It's difficult to determine tense involved. Perhaps this is a British thing, or a regionalism over there. Sometimes I would like to see the full verb construction, (if that is the correct way to speak of this grammatical issue) instead of 'sometimes I'd like to see...' I have used contractions a lot here, but I doubt I would write a story so consistently full of contractions in every line of speech. Another criticism why was the ending so rushed? Why didn't we read that Jimmy called someone to get Edith's body out of the Pit? It seemed like she was just left there. The story just glides into Jimmy and Fran, arm in arm (her silk bloused arm), walking away. This book had more good images though, such as, Kenny and the 'orange molten tears' running down his face.
Another excellent work by Ann Cleeves. I found the BBC series "Shetland" first, and came to the books much later. My wife calls these types of shows my "people with accents in dreary locations solving murders". It is always interesting to see what the producers decided to change from the books for the screen, and there are some changes. If you've watched the show and are looking for an exact replica in book form, you will be a bit disappointed...likewise, if you've read the books and are looking for the show to match word-for-word you won't get that. But please realize that both the books and the series are fantastic! I cannot remember if this book was made into an episode or not, as all the material here seemed new to me. I read through this book in less than 3 days, part of which was on a foggy ferry ride so it quite set the mood. As an American (albeit with some Scottish ancestry several generations back) some of the terms I did have to pause and look up (e.g., kirk = church) but probably only a handful across the entire book and it didn't detract from my enjoyment. I won't discuss the plot, I'll just say that if you like people with accents in dreary locations solving murders I highly recommend both the books and the show.
The characters are interesting but there are so many of them to keep track of. It's a good story, a little tedious to read but the setting is interesting. The ending comes up suddenly with a wallop when one of the characters explains everything to the detective who claims that he had already figured out the murder situation. The celebration of "Up Helly Aa" comes up again in this book but it is not explained or is the title translated. It obviously has something to do with the Scandinavian Vikings; but what?
What I liked about all of these stories, is the fact Ann Cleeves doesn’t let you guess who the murderer is. There is nothing that I didn’t like in the story this time either.

Here we start our story of intrigue and murder. Once again Bringing Jimmy Perez, with his methodical way of dealing with things and which seem to Roy Taylor, his senior investigating officer to be rather slow but that always did the trick, which is what happensin this case also. Roy Taylor would have liked to solve the case over Jimmy since he didn't the last time they were on a case together.

After the eve of an artist exhibition, the same man who acted strangely at the exhibition is found hanging with a clown’s mask over his face. He was found in the Hut near a jetty by Kenny Thomson, the very hut which had been built by Kenny and his brother Lawrence.

These stories are all extremely well written and one can see in ones own mind’s eye exactly where this is all taking place.
The characters are so well presented that it reminds me, just a little of Ruth Randell, not as stark and more kindly drawn in these books. These wonderful books are almost without a bad guy with Anne Cleve's compassionate view of all the characters. This is not to say there are no red herrings and multiple possibilities for the mystery to be solved. Indeed, guilt and shame appear to be shared by all in their own personal hells that are common to the human condition.
Just a quick review since I wrote a longer one for Raven Black. This was even better than the first book. The descriptions of the landscape and the eerie white nights were powerful. I loved it even more than Raven Black and I enjoyed that one very much, too. Looking forward to the third book in the series.

One quick note, I liked the way she handled the series continuity. She didn't give away too much. So readers do not have to read them in order.
